Professor Yaseen Taha Mustafa is an established authority in Applied Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). His academic journey began with a Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the University of Mosul in 1996. He advanced his research career at the University of Duhok, earning a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics in 2005 and serving as a lecturer until 2008.

In 2012, he completed his Ph.D. at the Faculty of Geo Information Science and Earth Observation at the University of Twente in The Netherlands. During this time, he authored several published academic papers and won the Best Student Paper Award at the 2011 ASPRS conference in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA..

Professor Mustafa then transitioned into key leadership roles at the University of Zakho in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. He directed the ICT Center from 2013 to 2016 and served as Vice President for Scientific and Postgraduate Affairs until 2023. He now heads the Applied Remote Sensing and GIS Center at the university. Prof. Mustafa's research interests are diverse and influential, spanning remote sensing, GIS, spatial statistics, and contextual image analysis. He is particularly adept at integrating mathematical and statistical tools, including machine learning and Bayesian networks, into his research. My research team focuses on addressing critical environmental challenges in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Key research initiatives include:

  • Climate reconstruction using dendrochronology and carbon modeling.
  • Forest conservation and reforestation optimization integrating machine learning techniques with remote sensing technologies.
  • Managing uncertainty in deep learning models through Bayesian approaches.
  • Assessing land use dynamics and groundwater availability utilizing geoinformatics.

Actively contribute to the global academic community through various editorial and peer review roles. The current and past responsibilities include:

Actively mentor MSc and PhD candidates in Applied Remote Sensing, GIS, and Machine Learning, having supervised 10 MSc and 9 PhD students.

  • Current doctoral supervision involves research on climate reconstruction using dendroclimatology and integrative machine learning for forest conservation.
  • Past supervised doctoral projects cover the spatiotemporal analysis of forest cover change, land use dynamics, Bayesian deep learning frameworks, and spatial agent based modeling.
  • Master degree supervision includes projects on soil organic matter prediction, groundwater availability assessment, and the impact of soil texture using advanced predictive modeling.
