The University of Zakho has announced the launch of a major afforestation project aimed at expanding green spaces and enhancing the university campus environment.
The project is implemented in cooperation with the Independent Administration of Zakho, the International Labour Organization (ILO), and the University of Zakho under the “Prospects Project – Improving Prospects for Host Communities and Forcibly Displaced Persons,” supported by the Employment Intensive Investment Programme (EIIP).
The project will involve planting 16,350 trees, including olive, Zawita pine, and pistachio trees. In addition to its environmental objectives, the project will create employment opportunities for engineers and gardeners, including Syrian refugees and internally displaced Iraqis.
The project’s final preparations were discussed in a meeting attended by Dr. Mohammed H. Khamo, Vice President of the University for Administrative and Financial Affairs, along with representatives of the partner organizations and relevant project committees.
The University of Zakho reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and welcomed continued cooperation with its partners in implementing future environmental initiatives.
