About the Center

Geo-Spatial Science in Service of the Region

A research center of scientific specialization in the use and interpretation of spatial visualization — developing educational and research capacity for the exploration of natural resources and environment-related studies.

Director's Message

Welcome to the Applied Remote Sensing and GIS Center at the University of Zakho. As Director, it's my pleasure to introduce you to our hub of scientific exploration within the vital fields of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. These disciplines are foundational in addressing the multifaceted environmental, societal, and urban challenges facing our world today.

Established in 2013 with a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and excellence, our center dedicates itself to the advancement of research, education, and practical applications within geospatial sciences. We provide a dynamic environment for students, scholars, and industry professionals to engage with state-of-the-art technology, contribute to pioneering projects, and enrich the collective understanding of remote sensing and GIS.

Our endeavors reach beyond the academic realm, aiming to cultivate strategic partnerships with government entities, industry experts, and global organizations. Through these collaborations, we utilize geospatial data to inform decision-making processes and policy development, promoting sustainable growth and environmental stewardship.

I encourage you to delve into the offerings of our center, where you'll discover the breadth of our programs, research initiatives, and the profound impact of our work. Whether you're a student keen on exploring geospatial sciences, a researcher looking for collaborative opportunities, or a professional interested in our services, the Applied Remote Sensing and GIS Center is your portal to a realm of endless possibilities.

We look forward to engaging with you and exploring how we can work together towards a better understanding and management of Earth's resources.

  • Lead in the application and transfer of spatial data and information technology to professionals and society.
  • Promote the use of spatial information systems to support sustainability and improve human well-being.

Our Vision

  • Become a leader in using remote sensing and GIS to solve real-world problems and benefit society.
  • Empower communities and decision-makers with spatial data to support sustainable development.
  • Build a center that connects research, technology, and practical applications to improve both people's lives and the environment.

Objectives

  • Education, training, and rehabilitation of specialists in remote sensing and GIS using sophisticated software.
  • Develop educational opportunities in computer-aided analysis of remote sensing and spatial information data.
  • Enable researchers and students to conduct sophisticated spatial data analysis with metadata and modeling.
  • Provide scientific aid and technical consulting to universities, corporations, and institutions.
  • Prepare creative pioneers able to develop research plans addressing community needs and future programs.

History of the Center

The Center dates to 2014, established in response to the growing demand for research projects applying modern remote sensing and GIS technologies to environmental and natural resource issues. Even before its founding, the team had built a 2013 database of natural trees — classified with their geographic locations — across the Zawita and Mangesh sub-districts. Today, the active research and development program of the Center advances the application of geo-spatial technologies — including remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), and global positioning systems (GPS) — and develops spatial-statistical analysis and modelling techniques for the environmental, agricultural, and natural resource sciences.
