The Bologna System aims to build a coherent, compatible and quality European Higher Education Area by harmonising the structures of higher education and encouraging cooperation among the universities. It is designed to enable student and staff mobility, increase the recognition of academic qualifications and study periods, establish a transparent system of credits (e.g. European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, ECTS) and boost the quality and international competitiveness of higher education. The Bologna System also supports the student-centred approach to learning and lifelong learning, to employability and to a closer link between higher education institutions and society.
